Anthony Mackie shared how he first learned he would become the new ‘Captain America’ during his first Big Ticket interview of 2025. He revealed that Chris Evans was the one who broke the news to him.
The actor recounted how the Steve Rogers actor pitched the surprise, saying, “We were shooting in Atlanta, it was a bunch of us at his house. He had this crazy house. We were sitting there watching a game. He goes ‘Have you read the script?’ I said ‘No.’ He’s like, ‘You don’t know?'”
Assuming the worst, Mackie continued, “I’m like, ‘Damn, and you know being black,’ I’m like, ‘I’m gonna die, damn! Like they getting rid of me! I didn’t even cause no trouble, I was just staying in the back, I didn’t bother nobody, right?’ So he’s like ‘Cmon, cmon,’ so we run.”
Together the two went down the basement, which the Marvel star described as the ‘mancave of all mancaves’ and shared, “He has all of his, like Marvel stuff laid out, his new script and all this stuff. I’m like ‘Oh, this is your prep room, like your work room.'”
“So, he comes down, gets the new script, he goes like the last 10 pages and he goes ‘Read it!’ So, me, like they killed me all, he’s just looking at me like ‘Huh? Huuh? Huuuuh?’ So, I get to the part, I’m reading the scene between us and he goes and hands me the shield. I’m like ‘So, why did you give me the shield?’ He’s like ‘Cause you’re Captain America!’ I’m like ‘What!’ So, literally we hug, we jump up and down. It was hilarious.”
Mackie stars as Sam Wilson/Captain America in ‘Captain America: Brave New World.’ The film follows Sam as he grapples with an international incident after Thaddeus Ross is elected President of the United States, forcing him to uncover and stop the true mastermind behind the chaos.
