Variety reported that, three months after Apple signed a deal with director Jon Watts to develop a sequel to the crime film ‘Wolfs’ starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, plans for a sequel have been shelved. The confirmation came after Collider published an interview with Watts on Friday morning. When asked about his future plans, Watts, who is currently promoting the new Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Skeleton Crew,’ responded, “I don’t know what I’m directing next, and I don’t think there’s going to be a ‘Wolfs’ sequel.”
Iin August, Apple shared a mixed update about the rollout of ‘Wolfs.’ Initially slated for a wide theatrical release in partnership with Sony, the tech giant instead pivoted to a one-week limited theatrical engagement beginning September 20, followed by its debut on Apple TV+ on September 27.
This last-minute strategy shift, enacted just over a month before the film’s release, raised eyebrows. George Clooney had stated in 2023, “Brad and I made the deal to do that movie where we gave money back to make sure that we had a theatrical release.” Despite the change, Apple simultaneously announced that Watts would write, direct, and produce a ‘Wolfs’ sequel, with Clooney and Pitt expected to reprise their roles as criminal underworld fixers.
‘Wolfs’ premiered at the Venice Film Festival in early September, where its two stars, Clooney and Pitt, walked the red carpet. Following its debut on Apple TV+, the streamer claimed it became the most-watched feature film in the platform’s history.
The New York Times reported high salaries added to the film’s headlines. According to The New York Times, Clooney and Pitt received $35 million each for their roles in the film. In response, Clooney said, “[It was], an interesting article and whatever her source was for our salary, it is millions and millions and millions of dollars less than what was reported. And I am only saying that because I think it’s bad for our industry if that’s what people think is the standard bearer for salaries,” the actor said. “I think that’s terrible; it’ll make it impossible to make films.”
Apple TV+ has yet to comment.
