In a recent conversation with Variety, Ariana DeBose, the star of the 2023 science fiction thriller ‘I.S.S.,’ revealed her thoughts about the film’s mysterious conclusion.
The ending of ‘I.S.S,’ which leaves the fate of the astronauts open-ended, has been a point for discussion. When asked about the final destination of the escape spacecraft, DeBose admitted:
“No, I don’t have an answer for that. When we shot it, I asked Gabriela, and she had an answer. But when I saw the film, I didn’t know where they were going. I liked that the question was left open for interpretation. Do you go back to your home when you don’t know what you’re going to find, with the knowledge that the last time you looked at your planet, it was essentially decimated? Or do you just stay in space and float?”
When DeBose questioned these, Gabriela Cowperthwaite chimed in and said that nobody really knows.
What’s I.S.S. About?
Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and penned by Nick Shafir, ‘I.S.S.‘ made its theatrical debut in the United States on January 19, 2024. Also featuring Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., Maria Mashkova, Costa Ronin, and Pilou Asbæk, the film unfolds on the International Space Station amidst a global conflict, compelling astronauts to seize control of the station.
The production of ‘I.S.S.’ had its own challenges, especially in accurately depicting zero gravity and the backdrop of real-world events, namely Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite these hurdles, Cowperthwaite and DeBose successfully brought the story to life.
Speaking to Variety, DeBose also touched on her future in acting and her potential return to Broadway. She expressed her desire to find the right project.
Outside of ‘I.S.S.,’ DeBose’s upcoming ventures include roles in ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ ‘Argylle,’ ‘Stealing Jokes,’ ‘House of Spoils,” and ‘My Ex-Friend’s Wedding.’
