Arrow Actor Stephen Amell Blasts James Gunn Over His ‘Cheap Shot’ At Green Arrow

The actor explained his displeasure over a joke made in the HBO Max series ‘Peacemaker’ that targeted his DC hero.

Christopher Smith (John Cena) mocked Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow along with other DC heroes in ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 by saying “That dude goes to brony conventions dressed as the back half of Twilight sparkling with a four-inch-wide butthole drilled into the costume.”

Amell shared his first reaction to the joke and explained why he took it personally in a recent chat with Chris Van Vliet.

“That was a little unnecessary. I didn’t f*cking appreciate that at all,” the actor explained. “Okay. I am just going to come right out and say this. There was just such…between the movies and ‘Peacemaker,’ a little bit…our show was kind of treated like sh*t. I get it, we’re on the CW, I get it, it’s TV.”

“But I also get the fact that when people think about the most recent iteration of DC, they don’t think about the Snyder Cut – they think about the Arrowverse,” he continued. “We got crapped on for years, and years, and years, and this just seemed excessive. I’m not actually mad, but I just remember hearing that and just being like, ‘F*ck those guys,’ like seriously.”

Amell mentioned that he had no problem with John Cena, though. He described the actor as a nice person and added, “If I should be mad at anyone, it should be James Gunn for writing that in the first place.”

‘Arrow’ debuted in 2012, with Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Andrew Kreisberg as showrunners. The cast featured Katie Cassidy, Colin Donnell, David Ramsey, Willa Holland, and Susanna Thompson alongside Stephen Amell.

The show enjoyed a generally positive reception and picked up multiple awards, though it saw a dip in ratings towards the end. It concluded in January 2020 after eight seasons.

‘Peacemaker’ premiered two years after the ‘Arrow’ finale as part of DCEU. James Gunn recently brought the series back in his rebooted DC Universe. Its second season is currently in the works.
