Awkwafina recently gave us an update about the ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel, but it might not be what you were hoping for.
During an interview at the press event for her new movie ‘Jackpot!,’ Awkwafina said she has not heard any new information about ‘Shang-Chi 2’:
“I have not. I haven’t, but [those were] exciting announcements at Comic-Con.”
Marvel Studios made several big announcements at Comic-Con. They rebranded ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and shared more details about ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ However, they did not share any news about ‘Shang-Chi 2.’
Simu Liu Assures You The Sequel Will Happen
‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ was Marvel’s first movie to be released after the pandemic started and did really well at the box office. Critics loved it too. Marvel Studios then decided to make a sequel and a Disney+ spin-off series about the Ten Rings organization.
The director of the first movie, Destin Daniel Cretton, was also supposed to direct ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.’ He stepped down from that role last fall. Simu Liu thought he would be part of the new Avengers movie because of Cretton, but now he is not sure. Liu said he does not know if he will be in the new Avengers movie, but he still hopes to be a part of it.
Simu Liu confirmed that ‘Shang-Chi’ 2 is still happening and that Cretton will be directing it despite all of the challenges ahead:
“Destin is such a special filmmaker and we’re very happy to have him on the sequel. He’ll be working on that and we’re really excited to see what he comes up with. I think he’s going to do a brilliant job.”
You can catch Awkwafina in her new movie ‘Jackpot!,’ which comes out on Prime Video on August 15th.
