Disney is on the lookout for someone to fill Johnny Depp’s boots in the ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ series, and it looks like Ayo Edebiri might be the one. Reports from Daniel Richtman suggest that Edebiri is the frontrunner for the lead role in the next installment, titled ‘Pirates 6.’
Known for her role in ‘The Bear’ that recently bagged her a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy, the actress is rumored to be stepping into the role of Anne, a character supposedly inspired by the real-life pirate Anne Bonny.
The ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ actress Karen Gillan was initially said to be considered for the part. But Disney seems to have changed its mind to include a Black female lead in the new flick.
The Plans For The Upcoming Projects
The upcoming ‘Pirates’ films are set to be led by a female cast, focusing on a younger crew hunting for hidden treasures. This aligns with Disney’s 2020 plans for two reboots, one with a strong female cast led by Margot Robbie.
Despite earlier excitement, Robbie mentioned in 2022 that Disney seemed to have second thoughts about the project:
“We had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would have been really cool. But I guess they [Disney] don’t want to do it.”
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, on the other hand, remains hopeful about it. In an interview with The Sun, he mentioned:
“It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first, or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.”
Captain Jack Sparrow’s Exit From The Franchise
The Pirates franchise faced a major change in 2020 when Johnny Depp, who played Captain Jack Sparrow, was fired amid domestic violence allegations from his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Depp counteracted with a defamation lawsuit against Heard.
During the 2022 court trial, he shared his thoughts on Disney’s decision, saying:
“Captain Jack Sparrow was a character that I had built from the ground up and was something that I put a lot of — you put a lot of yourself into characters. And also, having worked on those films with those people, and having put a lot of my own rewriting, dialogue, scenes, and jokes and whatever they are. I didn’t quite understand how, after that long relationship, and quite a successful relationship, certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.”
Ayo Edebiri’s potential role in the ‘Pirates’ saga follows her success in the FX series ‘The Bear,’ where she plays Sydney Adamu, a chef going through a culinary journey in Chicago. As casting rumors circulate, fans await confirmation.
