‘Back To The Future’s Michael J. Fox Changes His Mind About Retiring From Acting

He is open to returning if the right role comes along.

Michael J. Fox decided to retire from acting back in 2020 but hinted at a potential comeback in a recent chat with ET. He told the outlet:

“I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out.”

The actor made many appearances on the big and small screens. He played Marty McFly opposite Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson in ‘Back to the Future.’ But his health condition made acting challenging for him during this period.

His Decision To Stop Acting

Fox previously shared that Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood’ played a part in his decision to retire.

A scene in the film showed Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton breaking down in his trailer when he couldn’t remember his lines. This affected the ‘Back to the Future’ actor because he had a similar experience.

Fox had a hard time memorizing his lines during his final gig in 2020’s ‘The Good Fight’ episodes. The actor decided to ‘move on’ and told Empire Magazine in 2023 that he ‘was peaceful’ about retirement.

The Actor’s Health Issues

Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29. He made his condition public in 1998 and appeared in a documentary about his struggles last year.

He talked about filming Apple TV+’s ‘Still’ by saying:

“It was fun. I never would have set that as a goal. It just happened.”
