Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel hit theaters on Friday and immediately claimed the top spot at the box office, pushing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ down.
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ made an impressive $110 million in North America and $145 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This made it the third biggest opening of 2024. It also became the second-highest opening ever for a Tim Burton film, the second-largest September opening, and the second-biggest opening for a horror movie, beating ‘It: Chapter 2.’
In just one weekend, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ has already earned more than the original ‘Beetlejuice’ movie, which made $74 million in its entire run.
The sequel focuses on Lydia Deetz and her family, who return to their home in Winter River after a tragedy. When Lydia’s rebellious daughter, Astrid, finds a model of the town in the attic, she accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife, bringing Beetlejuice back into their lives.
The movie’s screenplay was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Burton worked with his frequent collaborators, including costume designer Colleen Atwood, cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos, and composer Danny Elfman.
Fans may hope for another sequel, but Tim Burton said he’s not sure about directing a third ‘Beetlejuice’ movie. He jokingly mentioned that if he were to follow the current pace of filmmaking, he could be over 100 years old by the time another sequel is made. He’s focusing on finishing this one for now.
