Carrie Anne Moss Says She’d Have Declined ‘The Acolyte’ Role If She Knew ‘Matrix’ Resemblance

The actress explains why she didn’t want to play another role similar to Trinity in any other project.

Carrie-Anne Moss appeared as Jedi Master Indara in Disney+’s ‘The Acolyte’ this year. Her new character had similar vibes to Trinity from ‘The Matrix’ franchise, which showrunner Leslye Headland herself touched on in interviews.

Moss recently spoke about this comparison in an interview with Collider. When asked if she feared being typecast after ‘The Matrix,’ she shared, “No, it was never a concern for me. I really just didn’t want to play characters like her because I didn’t want to give her to anybody else. I felt like the Wachowskis created her and that it would be kind of disloyal for me to take that vibe and give it to someone else.”

On Headland’s comparisons between Indara and Trinity, she added, “Now, she never said that to me. If she had said that to me, I would never have done it. And I didn’t see it that way at all. I mean, she’s a strong woman, and she fights but it’s so different.”

The ‘Matrix’ influence on ‘The Acolyte,’ especially for Moss’s role, has been obvious since the show’s first trailer came out. Moss even noted some similarities between her two characters in an earlier interview with Empire, though she said the experience was different.

“This was very different though, because I was by myself,” the actress said of her action scenes in the show. “I had always done ‘The Matrix’ with my co-stars, and there’s a certain energy. ‘On The Acolyte’ I was on my own, with my team, which was great because I got to ignite and access a part of myself. I was like, ‘I want to do everything.’ I loved it more than I can remember loving doing something in a long time. ‘I’m strong. I can learn this. I can show up, and I can find that containment.’”

Disney cancelled ‘The Acolyte’ following its Season 1 finale due to low interest and high criticism. Moss showed little concern for the news as Indara was already killed in the show.
