‘Carry On’ Star Thinks The Movie Can Be The Next ‘Die Hard’

‘Carry-On,’ a Christmas action thriller, has been a huge hit since its release on December 13. Not only is it one of the most-watched movies on the platform, but it also had the biggest “opening” for a Netflix movie this year. Star Taron Egerton, who plays protagonist Ethan in the movie, spoke about the possibility of a ‘Carry-On 2’ and said that if it were up to him, he would be in.

In an interview with Today, Egerton said that a sequel would generate “a really interesting conversation” if that’s what the people want. He stated he would be open to it; however, the story would need to be right. Like it or not, the movie’s plot is well-rounded and wraps up nicely without a setup for a sequel. “It’s kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel. But yeah, why not?” he said, also pointing out that ‘Die Hard’ had multiple films and quickly became a franchise.

The film follows TSA agent Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) as he tries to save his girlfriend Nora (Sofia Carson) from assassins led by The Traveler (Jason Bateman). In the movie, the assassins threaten to kill Nora unless Ethan allows a suitcase full of bombs through security.

When Carry-On begins, Ethan is your run-of-the-mill TSA agent working on one of the busiest days of the year: Christmas Eve. By the end, Ethan transforms into a John McClane-esque action hero ready to die defending those he loves, “yippee-ki-yay”-ing it up.

“It’s like a ’90s action-thriller,” Taron Egerton said on TODAY. “I read the script, and I just thought, ‘That’s a movie I want to see.’ The buy-in is immediate. Guy gets an earwig on the busiest day of the year, puts it in his ear and they threaten his girlfriend. It’s such a good set up for a movie.”

Egerton reiterated that if people want a sequel, “it would be a really interesting conversation,” adding that he would “be open to” it.

“It’s kind of like an extraordinary set of circumstances, so I think it would need a really innovative, creative idea to feel like a worthy idea for a sequel,” he says. “But yeah, why not.”

‘Carry-On’ scored 88% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
