Channing Tatum admits he hopes to star in a solo Gambit movie.
Tatum recently made a surprise appearance as Gambit in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ He has been eager to play this character for over a decade, but whether this dream comes true now depends on Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Disney’s Bob Iger.
In an interview at the premiere of his new movie ‘Blink Twice,’ Tatum was asked if he might finally get his own Gambit movie. He responded, “I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, my friend. Please.”
Tatum said he’s been asking Marvel for this opportunity for the last ten years. “Of course, I’ve said it. I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God,” he added.
20th Century Fox spent years trying to develop the movie, but the project faced many creative obstacles. Several directors, including Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski, were attached to the project at different times, but the movie never made it to the big screen. The project was delayed after the Disney/Fox merger. This put an end to those early efforts.
Tatum credits Ryan Reynolds for making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut possible. In an Instagram post, Tatum mentioned how he thought he had lost the chance to play Gambit forever but expressed his gratitude to Reynolds for fighting to get him the role. Tatum said he would always owe Reynolds for this opportunity.
There is some uncertainty about whether a Gambit spin-off will happen as Marvel Studios is planning to reboot the X-Men franchise. There is speculation that Tatum’s Gambit could be part of future MCU movies like ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’
