Charlize Theron Promises ‘The Old Guard 2’ Will Be Eventually Released

Charlize Theron believes ‘The Old Guard 2’ will come out eventually.

The last update was that Netflix isn’t planning to release ‘The Old Guard 2’ in 2024, even though filming finished over a year ago. In a recent conversation with Variety, Charlize Theron explained the long delay for the sequel:

“Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it. It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”

‘The Old Guard,’ based on a 2017 comic by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, came out in 2020 and was a surprise hit for Netflix. It ranked among the top 10 most successful original launches in the platform’s history.

There Might Be A Third Movie

‘The Old Guard’ received positive reviews with an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.7 out of 5 average score. For the sequel, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding joined the cast in unknown roles. Victoria Mahoney replaced Gina Prince-Bythewood as director. Greg Rucka wrote the script for both films.

In May 2023, producer Marc Evans hinted that there might be a trilogy. He told Variety:

“There’s an ending that kind of demands a number three, which makes me very happy.”

Returning cast members for the second movie are Charlize Theron as Andromache, KiKi Layne as Nile, Marwan Kenzari as Yusuf, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Ngô Thanh Vân as Quynh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as James Copley.

The film features a group of mercenaries led by Andy (Charlize Theron) who have protected the world for centuries. They can’t die, but their secret is exposed during a new mission. Now, Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne) must stop people who want to steal their powers.
