Academy Award-winning actor Charlize Theron showed her support for the people of Nigeria, who are struggling with police brutality. Theron posted an image that reads “We can’t be the future of the nation if we are dead” and demanded the Nigerian government disband the SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) that is the police unit with a long record of abuses.
The ‘Young Adult’ star Theron, captioned the photo by telling of the similarity between the things going in the United States and Nigeria.
“Sometimes we forget that we in the US are not the only ones fighting against injustice and corruption. What’s happening in Nigeria right now feels like an all too familiar story, but the scale of violence and oppression happening there is truly shocking – we can’t get complacent or turn a blind eye to it.”
Theron then informed her fans and followers about the said police unit and its cruel acts around the country, and encourage people to contribute to ending SARS. She also stated that standing with Nigerian youth was the responsibility of all humanity:
“The youth of Nigeria are standing up against the brutal, corrupt, and murderous “Special Anti-Robbery Squad” police unit – or #SARS for short. I find it amazing how young people seem to be the ones always leading the charge to change the world for the better. It’s our responsibility to stand with them.”
Even though the followers appreciated Theron’s acts aiming to raise awareness about SARS, they also reminded her of the ongoing racial battle in her own country, South Africa.
“Charlize, tell the people what it’s happening in your own country South Africa… Where white farmers are being persecuted and their farms are set up on fire …a battle between whites and blacks….” wrote, one of her followers.
“I understand you want to help Nigeria and bring awareness because it’s truly sad and I thank you for speaking up 🙌🏻 but also remember you are South African and need to face what’s happing the people of all color make that an awareness too because genocide is happening and you are turning a blind eye… We are so close to the civil war it’s not even funny” added, another.
