The producer of ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ confirmed that the movie will not use any AI-generated animation.
Chris Miller made it clear that the film will focus on creating new visual styles without relying on generative AI. After seeing fan concerns on Twitter, he wrote the following tweet:
“There is no generative AI in ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ and there never will be. One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work.”
Miller believes using generative AI would mean copying other artists’ work, and this goes against their vision for the movie.

Sony CEO Said Otherwise
Tony Vinciquerra, the CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said that the studio is focusing on using AI to reduce costs and make productions more efficient. Vinciquerra stated that AI would help in making both movies and TV shows more cost-effective:
“We’ll be looking at ways to use AI to produce films for theaters and television in more efficient ways, using AI primarily.”
He also noted that AI was a big issue in the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes and is still a major point in ongoing negotiations with the union:
“The agreements that came out of last year’s strikes and the agreements that will come out of the IATSE and Teamster [negotiations] will define roughly what we do with AI.”
Miller and his partner Phil Lord have always been against using generative AI in making animated movies. Miller said last year that AI can’t create anything truly new or original. He believes that while AI should not be used in the actual creative process, it can only be used to simplify some boring tasks. He added that AI is like a copying machine and cannot innovate.
‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2018. The sequel was nominated for the same award in 2023. ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is currently in production.
