Cillian Murphy’s Surprising Return: Is He The Zombie King In ’28 Years Later’?

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland shape the story in their zombie sequel.

One shot in the trailer of ’28 Years Later’ shows a zombie that looks like Cillian Murphy. This might be how he reprises his role.

Details about ’28 Years Later’ had raised questions about Murphy’s return. In an interview, Sony’s Tom Rothman confirmed Murphy, already announced as an executive producer, might reprise his role from ’28 Days Later.’

Rothman explained, “Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way. This is (director) Danny (Boyle) at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it.”

The trailer for ’28 Years Later’ finally arrived, teasing the next chapter in Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s zombie saga. It begins with kids watching ‘Teletubbies,’ but things take a dark turn. The story jumps 28 years forward to an island community with strict roles, where not everything is as it seems.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams leave the island on a mission, but chaos unfolds. They take shelter in a house with what seems to be a tied-up zombie. The trailer hints at dangers from both zombies and humans, with glimpses of mutations.

The trailer has sparked speculation about Murphy’s role. Some fans think they spotted the actor’s character, Jim, as a zombie in the trailer. He appears behind Jodie Comer’s character in a field, looking very worn out.

There was hope Murphy would return to the franchise, but his name isn’t on the promotional posters. However, he is listed as an executive producer on Sony’s website. Many on social media joked about Murphy’s possible return, with one saying, “Method acting that would even shame Christian Bale.” Some complained that the quick shot felt like a spoiler.

’28 Years Later’ takes place nearly 30 years after a ‘rage virus’ escaped a lab, infecting humans. Survivors live in quarantine on an island, but a mission to the mainland reveals horrifying mutations affecting both infected and survivors.

The film will be released on June 20, 2025.
