Colin Farrell: ‘I’m Not In The Same League With Heath Ledger’

Colin Farrell wins Golden Globe for his role in ‘The Penguin.’

Colin Farrell has won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot in ‘The Penguin,’ joining an exclusive group of actors recognized for playing comic book villains. He becomes only the third actor to win a Golden Globe for such a role, following Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker).

In the press room after his win, Farrell expressed admiration for Ledger and Phoenix, both of whom won acclaim for their portrayals of the DC villain ‘Joker.’

“You mentioned two actors who are, I think, for my money, two of the most extraordinarily talented and gifted and just brilliant artists in films that I’ve ever had the fortune to observe and be affected by. What Heath did in Chris Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ was extraordinary, and will will live on for future generations. And what [Phoenix] did with the Joker was as as exemplified by all the awards that he won, in the Oscars. It was extraordinary.

He continued,“It was so special, both of them. So to have your name just uttered in the same sentence as those performances, honestly, it’s lovely, but still I’m more of just a fan of it all! I don’t feel like I’m part of that pantheon. Jaoquin and Heath, just two extraordinary and honest great actors.”

Heath Ledger won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for his posthumous portrayal of the Joker in ‘The Dark Knight.’ In 2020, Joaquin Phoenix earned the Best Actor Golden Globe for his groundbreaking performance in ‘Joker.’ Now, Farrell’s award cements ‘The Penguin’ as a critically acclaimed portrayal, placing him in the company of legendary performances.
