During a recent appearance on Collider Ladies Night, ‘Creature Commandos’ Maria Bakalova said he hopes to collaborate with James Gunn forever.
“I will forever be grateful because my dream is to be able to work with him again and again and again,” the actress said of continuing to work with Gunn at DC. “If I have to choose one person that I want to stick with the rest of my life, it will be him because he knows how to mix comedy with tragedy, with love, with action, with just everything together, and it’s always beautiful.”
She continued, “I got the script and I read it, and I was excited about my character because she had multiple layers. She was something way different than me — feminine and a woman. ‘I’m a woman and I know what I want. I want this, and I’m going to achieve it.’ I’m not like that. I’m very shy.”‘
Bakalova first worked with Gunn in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ as Cosmo the Space Dog. After Gunn left Marvel for DC, he cast her in his ‘Creature Commandos’ as Princess Ilana Rostovic.
“Maria was the first person we ever offered a role in the DCU [to],” Gunn shared with Entertainment Weekly before ‘Creature Commandos’ premiered.
The director added, “She was the first person that we cast because I wrote the role for her, and we had to find out early because her native language is Bulgarian, so we needed to write all of the other characters to fit her language and we had to cast her right away.”
‘Creature Commandos’ debuted on Max on December 5, 2024, with two episodes. It’s the first part of DCU’s ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.’ A second season was confirmed in December 2024, as Variety reported.
