After director Jon M. Chu revealed that sequel ’Wicked: For Good’ will feature new songs in addition to the ones from the Broadway musical, Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, revealed on Variety’s ’Awards Circuit’ podcast that she co-wrote one of them with Stephen Schwartz.
“I collaborated on one of the new songs, and it’s so special to me. When we filmed it, the entire crew was in tears. I hope audiences are ready – it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is,” she said.
The actress also promised a darker and deeper follow-up, adding, “We’re diving deeper into the consequences of the characters’ choices. The story is richer, and the stakes are higher. It’s not just a continuation; it’s a transformation.”
The first ’Wicked’ movie became a phenomenon when it saw release last month, attracting a large audience. Fans of the Broadway musical were especially drawn to the adaptation, often singing along to the original tracks in theaters.
Erivo supported this highly-criticized trend during a chat at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, saying, “Good. I’m OK with it. We spent this long singing it ourselves — it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.”
Following this, Universal organized sing-along screenings of the movie across the country on Christmas Day. If ’Wicked: For Good’ hits the audience the same, it might get the same treatment following its release on November 21, 2025.
