Dafne Keen Reflects On Her Emotional Reunion With Hugh Jackman

She explains how their characters’ bond is still strong, even in a new movie.

Dafne Keen shares her thoughts on reuniting with Hugh Jackman in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Keen spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the emotional campfire scene that brought back memories of their time together in the earlier film. She explained how the scene showed the strong bond between Laura and Wolverine:

“Imagine losing your only father figure in life, only to reunite with your father almost ten years later, but he doesn’t know that you are his daughter and he doesn’t have that bond with you in return. So it’s heartbreaking and beautiful that they are almost father and daughter in every universe.

As soon as they meet each other, he feels comfortable enough to have that conversation with her. I don’t think he would’ve had that conversation with anyone else, and she wouldn’t have had that conversation with anyone else either. So it was a really lovely thing to play, because, even if he doesn’t know her, he does know her. They’re one and the same.”

Keen plays a different version of X-23 in this new movie, but she felt the connection between Laura and Wolverine carried over from ‘Logan.’

Keen Was Excited To Return As X-23

Keen previously thought she may never play the character again because plans for an X-23 movie were canceled after Disney bought 20th Century Fox. Keen made peace with this even though she felt playing X-23 at age 11 was one of the greatest experiences of her career. She recalled:

“I was quite sad. I was like, ‘Oh well, I guess that’s it. That’s life, and I’ll have to move on’ – even though this is one of the greatest characters I’ll ever get to play, and annoyingly, I got to play her at 11! I peaked at 11.”

Keen also said there were talks of an X-23 movie when she was younger, but those plans fell through:

“There were talks of a script being made. I’d heard it was an X-23 [movie]. I dunno how much of what I’m saying is true because I was 11, but this is what I’d heard through the grapevine.”

Things changed when Keen received a call from Shawn Levy while she was working on ‘Star Wars: The Acolyte.’ This call offered her the chance to reprise her role as X-23, and she was extremely grateful for this unexpected opportunity.
