David Beckham Admits He Hated Making His Own Documentary

He said he was nervous and uncomfortable throughout the process.

David Beckham revealed that he ‘hated almost every moment’ of making his Netflix documentary ‘Beckham.’

The four-part series became a hit last year and gave viewers a look into Beckham’s personal life and career, but Beckham says the process was far from easy.

Speaking at the Royal Television Society conference in London, Beckham shared that both he and his wife, Victoria, were nervous about the documentary. He explained that it took him a long time to accept the idea of making it. “It worried me and it made Victoria nervous,” he said. “I hated almost every moment of making it… it was very difficult.”

Beckham admitted he wasn’t ready to talk about his career when he first retired, but the pandemic and the 10-year anniversary of his retirement made it feel like the right time to finally tell his story.

The soccer star also said that the documentary revealed new parts of their lives that they kept private until then. “As much as people think they know everything about us they don’t really and we don’t really let those doors open to our house but I knew it was the right time and then telling the story,” he stated.

Beckham’s production company Studio 99 was behind the project, and he spent a lot of time searching for the right director. He eventually chose Fisher Stevens after he was recommended by Leonardo DiCaprio. Beckham said he wanted Stevens to make him feel uncomfortable during the filming because he believed it would lead to a more honest documentary.

Beckham was one of the executive producers, he claimed that he had no control over the final product. Beckham didn’t see any edits or cuts before the documentary was released. In the end, both David and Victoria were happy with how it turned out.

Now, Studio 99 is working on another documentary. This time it’s focusing on Victoria.”I’m really excited about this one because she is an amazing woman,” Beckham said. “She’s worked hard for 18, 19 years on her business and suddenly she’s having the success she deserves. People are going to see her personality and her work ethic.”
