‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ director Shawn Levy confirmed that he will be making a new ‘Star Wars’ movie, but his project will stand on its own and won’t connect to any other movies in the series.
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Levy explained that he wants to create something fresh and not just repeat the same parts of the Star Wars timeline that fans have seen before. He said he isn’t interested in making a film that feels similar to others in the franchise or one that has to fit into a bigger storyline:
“I’ll say that the experience of crafting this story has forced me to think about that question. There’s only so many times that ‘Star Wars’ movies can revisit the same section of the timeline, and so it’s really forced me – because I don’t want to do a ‘Star Wars’ movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie.
I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me, both in tone and characters, so I think that there is certainly the Force and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves. And the way that that can make us powerful, those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment, that’s ‘Star Wars’ to me.”
Levy is focusing on building a story that feels natural to him, especially in terms of tone and characters.
Lucasfilm’s Focus Was On Skywalker Saga
Lucasfilm focused mostly on the Skywalker Saga for a while, including the sequel trilogy and spin-offs that took place between the prequels and the original movies. They recently started exploring different periods like the High Republic era, which fans can see on Disney+.
Although some recent projects (like ‘The Acolyte’) got mixed reviews, Lucasfilm is still pushing forward with new ideas. The studio announced several new projects last year at the Star Wars Celebration in London. These include a movie by director James Mangold about the origins of the first Jedi and a sequel focused on Rey Skywalker.
Another project, ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu,’ was also announced and will be coming to theaters instead of just streaming. It has been almost five years since the last Star Wars movie was released in theaters, so it seems Lucasfilm is ready to return to the big screen.
