Director Denis Villeneuve shared new details about the potential third ‘Dune’ movie,
‘Dune: Part Two’ became one of the biggest films of 2024. Villeneuve has now confirmed that a third film is in development, and it will center on the theme of war.
As per ComicBook, Villeneuve recently explained that in ‘Dune: Part Two,’ Paul Atreides has to start a war to save his friends. If the third movie happens, it will pick up over a decade into Paul’s reign as Emperor and show the consequences of the holy war he started.
In Frank Herbert’s novel, this war results in billions of deaths across the universe. “I tried to be faithful to Frank Herbert’s vision about the idea of a cautionary tale, about being careful with charismatic figures, and the danger of blending religion and politics,” the director says.
‘Dune Messiah’ is still being written, but Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment confirmed the film is in development. December 18, 2026, is set as a release date for Villeneuve’s next film, though it’s not yet clear if this will be ‘Dune Messiah.’
Villeneuve is clear that the third movie will not be a traditional trilogy. He views ‘Dune: Part One’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’ as a complete story. If ‘Dune Messiah’ happens, Villeneuve intends for it to feel different and stand on its own.
There is no confirmed release date for ‘Dune Messiah.’
