A new trailer for Dexter: Original Sin has been released, hinting that Michael C. Hall’s character, Dexter Morgan, might still be alive.
Despite debuting in 2006, Dexter remains one of Showtime’s most popular series. The show made waves in the late 2000s by immersing viewers in the mind of a serial killer, encouraging them to sympathize with him and even condone his actions—a somewhat taboo concept at the time.
Dexter ended in 2013 but left the door open for more if an idea ever came up. That opportunity materialized in 2021 with Dexter: New Blood, a continuation of the story starring Michael C. Hall. The series picked up ten years later, with Dexter living a quiet life under a new identity in snowy upstate New York, abstaining from murder. However, his estranged son found him and began exhibiting dark urges that Dexter recognized all too well. By the end of New Blood, Dexter was killed.
However, the newly released trailer for Dexter: Original Sin teases that Dexter Morgan might still be alive.
Although Original Sin is set in the 1990s, it appears to partially continue the story of present-day Dexter. The trailer shows Dexter Morgan lying in the snow, covered in blood, followed by scenes of him being rushed to the hospital and undergoing surgery. Dexter appears to have been shot in the chest, likely in the heart, but seems to have survived.
Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Dexter will return in a new sequel series titled Dexter: Resurrection. The series will continue where New Blood left off, indicating that Dexter is indeed alive. Not much else is known about the series.
Rumors suggest that Peter Dinklage and Gillian Anderson may star in Dexter: Resurrection, but little is known about their potential roles.
Actor Patrick Gibson will portray a young Dexter Morgan, filling in the gaps from his graduation to his early days working at Miami Metro. While flashbacks in the original series offered glimpses of Dexter’s past, it appears Original Sin will show many of the murders represented by the blood slides introduced in the original show.
Dexter: Original Sin is set to premiere on Paramount+ on December 13, while Dexter: Resurrection is expected to release sometime in 2025, though production has not yet begun.
