Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay took her Instagram to express her gratitude for coming to the end of the 5th season shooting for the TV drama series, ‘Queen Sugar.’
DuVernay uploaded a series of black & white behind-the-scenes photos from the TV show, and added a caption that reads:
“That’s a wrap on Season Five of QUEEN SUGAR. My goodness. A challenge to say the least. But despite Covid, quarantines, hurricanes, hissyfits, Zoomitis, masks and shields and rapid tests galore, we made it!”
Then the director said that the crew rose to every obstacle related to the pandemic “like Olympians” and thanked each member:
“The crew was led by my producing partner @paulgarnes who put together a safety plan that went above and beyond. We never shut down because of him and @cowwmonster and the phenomenal AD team and HODs. The directors were superior, led by producing director @lmwolk. She, @lisafrance2067 and @sh00ter_ worked under wild circumstances and did it all with grace and good vibes.”
According to the director, best known for ‘When They See Us,’ the cast was “its usual beautiful self.” Within the series, the actors, including Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, and Kofi Siriboe, could “reach deeper each and every season to explore the expanse of Black identity.” DuVernay concluded her message as follows:
“This work may be their best yet. I join with Paul and our fellow EP @sparks.anthony in saluting our family in New Orleans tonight. Tonight is their night. You did that! And we celebrate you each and all. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and bless you.”
In another Instagram post, the director shared a photo of the poster of ‘Queen Sugar’ gracing the prime Warner Bros studio billboards, and wrote as a caption:
“We see you shinin’, you beautiful Bordelons! Season Five. Coming soon. ✨✨✨”
The release date of the 5th season has yet announced.
