Director Ti West recently talked about the future of the X franchise after the release of the third film, ‘MaXXXine.’
The franchise, which includes ‘X,’ ‘Pearl,’ and now ‘MaXXXine,’ follows Maxine Minx and her quest for fame. West shared with Variety that ‘MaXXXine’ feels like a good place to end the story, but there still might be more to explore in this world:
“Making a movie is, at best, two years of trauma, so we’re just figuring out a story worth enduring that. I’m very grateful to A24. I’m very proud of these three movies. And it feels like a good place to stop, but I do have ideas of how to continue this ‘universe,’ or whatever you want to call it.
When West first started working on the films, he didn’t plan for it to be a trilogy. The idea expanded while filming ‘X’ in New Zealand during the pandemic. ‘Pearl’ was secretly made using the same crew. Both ‘X’ and ‘Pearl’ were popular with fans, and ‘MaXXXine’ is expected to follow suit.
West Says The Story Can Be Different
West shared that if he returns to the ‘X’ franchise, it may not follow Maxine’s story. It could focus on a supporting character or explore a different decade of cinema:
“In about two weeks, I will wake up for the very first time not thinking about something related to these movies. Then, the movie is done, it’s out, and I’m off to the next thing. And if that brings me back around to ‘X,’ great. But if it brings me to something else, that’s fine too. So, we’ll see.”
West is now looking forward to a break and considering new projects. He may or may not come back to the X franchise.
‘MaXXXine’ is currently in theaters.
