‘Doctor Who’ showrunner Russell T. Davies says he got the idea for the season finale from ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi.’
We find out the truth about Ruby Sunday’s parents in the final episode called ‘Empire of Death’: they are just ordinary people. According to ComicBook.com, Davies says this idea was inspired by ‘The Last Jedi,’ where Rey’s parents were also shown to be ordinary:
“This is kind of my reaction to [that film]. The second film said that [Rey] was nothing special, there was nothing special about her parentage… She was just… an ordinary person with the Force. I really loved the version where she wasn’t special. When she’s ordinary. She’s not the daughter of Sutekh. She’s not the daughter of the Time Lords or Rassilon or something like that. Her mum is Louise Miller, who was 15 years old and pregnant, from a dangerous, abusive home, and left her child on the doorstep. Because I think it’s a better story.”
So, what Davies liked was the idea that someone could be special on their own without having famous or powerful parents.
What Happened In The Final Episode?
U.N.I.T. uses DNA to find out who Ruby’s parents are. They discover that her mother is Louise Allison Miller and her father is William Benjamin Garnett.
Louise had Ruby when she was a teenager. She didn’t tell William she was pregnant. Louise had a tough life with an abusive stepfather, and she left Ruby on the church steps to protect her. She wanted Ruby to be named after a ‘Ruby Road’ street sign she saw when leaving her.
Ruby tracks down her mother after learning about her parents. Louise is now a 35-year-old nurse. Ruby introduces herself and brings Louise into her adopted family. U.N.I.T. also finds William, and Ruby plans to meet him soon.
There are still some questions left unanswered, like why Ruby could make it snow whenever she thought about being left behind.
