Ncuti Gatwa, Millie Gibson, and writer Russel T. Davies recently joined Variety at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about ‘Doctor Who.’ The team told the outlet that they wanted to have Matt Smith (11th Doctor) back in the show’s upcoming season.
‘Doctor Who’ got a rough reboot with Davies’ return as the head writer in 2023. But it still brought actors from previous seasons back for more adventures. The 10th Doctor’s David Tennant was one of the names that returned in the last season’s early episodes.
Jodie Whittaker’s 13 regenerated at the end of ‘The Power of the Doctor,’ and got her old face back as the 14th incarnation. Then, Tennant bi-generated and had Ncuti Gatwa as his other half in the 60th Anniversary specials.
Season 2 Is Coming Soon
Gatwa is now ready to return for more time travel alongside Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday and Varada Sethu. The cast finished filming for the Disney+ show’s Season 2 in May 2024. The 15th Doctor actor reflected on his experience by saying:
“Season 2 felt like a chance to flex the muscles properly. So exciting. You’re fueled by the writing and by each new story, each new monster, each new addition into our world, there’s many in Season Two. It’s just the fun of the show. I think that just drives you growing into the character.”
Gibson added:
“That [episode] was the first one I filmed and the biggest challenge. So, I was so proud of how it came out.”
The Doctor Has A New Companion
Earlier rumors said Millie Gibson would leave the show after the first season, but the studio confirmed that she and Varada Sethu would continue together.
Sethu previously played Mundy Flynn in the episode ‘Boom.’ Gatwa said of her return:
“[She brought] such incredible energy to the TARDIS and is just a joy to work with.”
The actor added that ‘epic danger and epic growth’ were waiting for The Doctor and his companions in Season 2. The TARDIS team will return in the Christmas special, ‘Joy to the World,’ on December 25, 2024.
