Editors Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid shared why Gambit’s post-credits scene in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ was ultimately left out.
The scene showed Gambit walking through a void, stepping over the bodies of his enemies, and finding a portal out. During an interview with Screen Rant, Zimmerman and Reid said it could’ve been included at the end of the film, but they decided to keep Gambit’s survival more of a mystery. The scene only appears briefly as an easter egg when Deadpool returns to the TVA to clear his name.
Reid explained that including the Gambit scene would’ve disrupted the flow of the film’s ending. The post-credits scene that was used featured Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool showing a funny moment where Chris Evans’s Johnny Storm from ‘Fantastic Four’ unleashed a tirade of R-rated insults. According to Reid, this scene was a better fit for the tone of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
Reid said, “A rhythm to the end credit sequence that we had was the Legacy reel which was a really important part of the process. It was something that we built, actually, while we were on strike, and that was a sentiment to come off the film with, and then it was from there, we knew that we had this really wonderful mic-drop-coda with Johnny Storm that was going to close the film out. I think the Gambit Sparkle Circle feels like a traditional Marvel coda, and I think what these guys were always trying to do was sort of subvert the audience’s expectations in that sense.”
The Gambit scene didn’t make it into the movie, but there were efforts to give Channing Tatum’s character a moment to shine. Ryan Reynolds posted the deleted scene online after the film’s release, and this helped stir up excitement for the movie again.
Channing Tatum was originally cast as Gambit in 2006 for ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ but that didn’t happen. There were plans for a solo Gambit movie, but those were canceled when Disney and 20th Century Fox merged. Tatum says that he’s used to the disappointment but would love to play Gambit again if Marvel’s Kevin Feige gives him the chance.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is available on digital platforms, but there’s no official date for when it will be available to stream on Disney+.
