Universal Pictures announced Elizabeth Banks as the director for Dark Universe’s ‘The Invisible Woman’ reboot in 2019. But the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and various Hollywood strikes. Banks confirmed that the production was not active in a recent chat with ComicBook:
“For one thing, what happened was they made an ‘Invisible Man’ movie, and they’re making another one. So, I think Universal wants to see that through. I’m really interested in the idea that we have, and it is still there, but it’s not something I’m actively working on at this moment in time. I’m making a television show right now. Then I got to go make another television show, and then we’ll see what the heck we’re going to do.”
The director referred to a sequel to Leigh Whannell’s ‘The Invisible Man’ although the 2020 film wasn’t intended to be part of the Dark Universe at the beginning. It’s unclear whether plans for a followup are official or not.
Ongoing Plans For Dark Universe
Universal decided to reboot its Universal Monsters franchise with Dark Universe and kicked it off with ‘The Mummy’ in 2017. The studio tried out different approaches to its monster-themed movies, despite a rocky start. On the other hand, many projects have so far failed to move forward.
Paul Feig came on board to make ‘Dark Army.’ The film was set to feature an ensemble of monsters but received no updates since its announcement. A new version of ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ and two Dracula projects also saw little progress.
Meanwhile, production on a new ‘Wolf Man’ started earlier this year. The studio also scheduled a rebooted ‘Nosferatu’ for release later this year.
