Beau DeMayo, who has been in the spotlight due to serious allegations following his firing from Marvel, shared his views on ‘Wonder Man’ on his X account and touched on the studio’s treatment of the Black characters as well as the crew.
Quoting a post about the upcoming show on X, DeMayo wrote, “I really want this show to be good but this makes sense as
Marvel Studios does not take black people or our stories seriously. How could they when you have top execs making race jokes about black writers in notes meeting or saying, ‘Well, you can pitch that b/c you’re Black.'”
In response to a tweet asking if the studio would again fail to do justice to the Black mutant of ‘X-Men ’97,’ Storm, he added, “I’ll say this. They wanted to recast Storm for ‘X-Men ’97.’ It was odd hearing a table of white Marvel execs tell me and other Black crew members that we were wrong b/c she didn’t sound ‘African enough’ — whatever that means.”
The writer continued, “We went with their pick, then they realized we were right and forced the team to break their backs re-recording half the season with the OG Storm. You lazily left their pick in the Making Of ‘X-Men ’97’ doc. Loved her just not the fit we needed.”
DeMayo previously revealed more details about his experiences with Marvel Studios, claiming that the studio attempted to smear and silence him after his dismissal from ‘X-Men ’97.’ He alleged that Marvel did not take the stories of Black characters seriously and accused the studio of whitewashing characters in the animated series. “For example, the ‘X-Men ’97’ crew and I fought hard to have Storm’s skin tone darker and more accurate to her heritage versus the OG show,” he stated.
The studio announced earlier this year that it had terminated DeMayo for alleged inappropriate behavior toward staff members. However, the producer denied these allegations, claiming the real reason for his firing was homophobia.
