Westeros might be heading to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter has learned Warner Bros. is quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, marking a potential landmark shift for the franchise.
The project remains in early development with no writer, director, or cast attached. However, this move signals a dramatic change in strategy for the property. While Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss previously pushed to end their series with three feature films instead of the 2019 final season – an idea Martin himself supported – HBO had long resisted bringing the franchise to theaters.
The landscape has shifted significantly since then. Under new leadership (HBO’s Casey Bloys and Warner Bros.’ Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy), the company has embraced a more fluid approach between film and television. Recent examples include The Batman spawning HBO’s ‘The Penguin’, Max’s upcoming ‘Dune: Prophecy’ following Villeneuve’s films, and a new Harry Potter TV series in development alongside the film franchise.
The news comes as HBO continues expanding the TV side of Westeros. ‘House of the Dragon’ recently wrapped its second season, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is slated for 2025. While these projects and other concepts in development focus on the past, the possibility of exploring post-Game of Thrones storylines remains untapped.
This wouldn’t be the franchise’s first theatrical presence – HBO has previously screened major episodes in theaters for promotional events. But this marks the first dedicated feature film development in the property’s history.
