Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin hinted at how many spinoff shows are still being made. ‘Game of Thrones’ premiered on HBO in 2011 and ended with season 8 in 2019. The series continues with spinoffs like ‘House of the Dragon’ (released in 2022) and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ coming soon.
At a recent event in Oxford, UK, Martin reportedly shared how many ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoffs are in development, according to authors Elio & Linda on X.
According to Elio & Linda, Martin said there are seven ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoffs in development. This includes three live-action shows (like ‘Aegon the Conqueror’ and ‘Ten Thousand Ships’) and four animated shows (including ‘The Golden Empire’ and a Sea Snake show). Three of these shows haven’t been announced yet.
Another Spinoff Might Have Been Cancelled
A series about Kit Harington’s ‘Game of Thrones’ character, Jon Snow, was announced in 2022, but the actor said earlier this year that the show seems to be canceled. The actor told Screen Rant:
“I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.”
Harington added:
“And currently, it’s not [in development]. Currently, it’s off the table because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
‘Game of Thrones’ was very successful on HBO, so it’s no surprise the company wants to expand its shows. So far, this has worked well, as ‘House of the Dragon’ has received strong reviews and viewership. The show just finished its second season, and two more seasons are coming. ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ will be out next summer and is already highly anticipated.
