In a recent conversation with IndieWire at the Emmy Awards, Gary Oldman said he could play Dumbledore in the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series.
“I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people,” the actor said. “Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore.”
“I love Sirius,” Oldman also spoke about his character, Sirius Black. He is Harry Potter’s godfather spent 12 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit before escaping, as seen in 2004’s ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.’
The actor added, “He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.” His life ended early when his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange killed him in 2007’s ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.’
Oldman called his performance in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies ‘mediocre’ last year. Later this year in May, he talked about his comments at a Cannes press conference for his new movie, ‘Parthenope,’ after fans started discussing it.
“What I meant by that is, as any artist or any actor or painter, you are always hypercritical of your own work,” he explained. “If you’re not, and you’re satisfied with what you’re doing, that would be death to me. If I watched a performance of myself and thought, ‘My God, I’m fantastic in this,’ that would be a sad day.”
In a 2023 chat, the actor said he would have played Sirius Black differently if he had read the books like Alan Rickman. He said, “So, when I started ‘Harry Potter,’ all I had was the book, ‘The Prisoner of Azkaban,’ and that one representation of that man.”
Oldman continued, “One book in the library of Sirius Black. And that’s kind of what I meant by it. It’s not me looking at the movie and saying it’s a terrible film or I’m terrible, I just wish it had been under different circumstances.”
The actor’s latest film, ‘Parthenope,’ arrived on May 21, 2024. He also plays Jackson Lamb in ‘Slow Horses.’ The TV series was renewed for a fifth season in January.
