As the release date for ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ draws near, director Gil Kenan recently offered SFX Magazine a preview of what fans can expect from the movie, saying it will be a ‘scary’ one.
Known for his work on the 2015 ‘Poltergeist’ remake and the ‘Scream’ TV series, Kenan has made it clear that ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ will not shy away from delivering genuine scares. In conversations with SFX Magazine, he said the film’s aim is to balance fear with laughter in a manner that will enhance both elements:
“This is a scary Ghostbusters movie; I set out to go for the thrills. As a big-screen experience, I think it’s going to play like a scary, funny movie. The secret is that the scarier a scene is, the funnier the next joke is going to play. That’s the way that the pendulum swings with tone. Twisting that lever to make sure that the scares land is a way of making sure that the jokes are funnier.”
Scheduled to hit cinemas on March 22, 2024, the film promises a blend of humor and horror, staying true to the original while introducing a new wave of terror to New York City.
Other Details About ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’
‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire‘ reunites fans with the iconic Ghostbusters team of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zeddemore, played by the original actors Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson. Alongside them, characters from 2021’s ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife,’ including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace, will return.
In the movie, the team will be going against a new challenge known as the ‘death chill’ and a sinister villain, Garraka. A big departure from previous storylines, ‘Ghostbusters 4’ introduces ‘death chill’ as a mysterious specter capable of freezing the city and bringing terror among its citizens.
Offering a mix of nostalgia and innovation, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ seeks to build on the success of ‘Afterlife.’ The film’s PG-13 rating is designed to deliver scary experiences without overstepping bounds for younger viewers. However, according to Kenan’s recent statements, the film may give them a sleepless night or two.
