Giancarlo Esposito Shares His Only Request To Join ‘The Mandalorian’

Giancarlo Esposito shared how he got ready for ‘The Mandalorian.’

During his panel at Comic-Con in Los Angeles on October 5, Giancarlo Esposito explained his one ‘request’ for being part of ‘The Mandalorian.’

“The one request I asked for was a cape, and that gave me the feeling that I had to walk a certain way and be a certain way,” the actor said of his character.

Esposito said he didn’t feel like his character Moff Gideon until ‘I had the Darksaber’ on his arm. He explained, “It’s interesting to have an extension of your arm, but it’s not your arm. It’s a weapon. It’s a tool that’s revered.”

The actor added, “So I had to first bow down to it and give it great respect and then start to play around in my living room with a broomstick to figure out how not to set it on fire and how not to chop my own arm off.”

Esposito first appeared as Moff Gideon in Season 1, Episode 7 of ‘The Mandalorian.’ He played a bigger role in the Season 1 finale. In Season 2, he was the main villain trying to capture the Force-sensitive child, Grogu.

Although he lost to Dinn Djrain (Pedro Pascal) and was captured, he returned for the last two episodes of Season 3 with new Mandalorian armor. However, he is believed to have died in a fiery blast in the Season 3 finale.

Even though Moff Gideon seemed to die, Esposito believes he is still alive. In February 2024, at a Mega Con Orlando panel, the actor said, “So what you put out is what you receive, and I believe your mind can control a lot of your circumstance. And no matter what your circumstance is, you can overcome much of that circumstance if you’re in the right mindset,” Esposito said. “I am not gonna die, so, therefore, Moff Gideon is not dead!”

If Lucasfilm brings back Esposito, it might be in the new movie, ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu,’ which should start production by the end of 2024. This movie is one of several ‘Star Wars’ films Lucasfilm is working on. Another will feature Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker. Other projects include James Mangold’s film about the origins of The Force and Dave Filoni’s movie set in the ‘New Republic’ era.
