Disney Plus’ new holiday movie, ‘Godmothered,’ directed by Sharon Maguire (best known for ‘Bridget Jones’ movies) and written by Kari Granlund and Melissa Stack, has been released on December 4 through the streaming service. The fantasy comedy film, starring Jillian Bell (as ‘Eleanor’), Isla Fisher (as ‘Mackenzie Walsh’), Jane Curtin (as ‘Moira’), and Mary Elizabeth Ellis (as ‘Paula Walsh’), received mixed & average reviews on its first day.
The daily newspaper, Boston Herald released a critique paper on December 4, titled “Despite cast, ‘Godmothered’ has no magic” and graded the film, produced by Walt Disney Pictures and The Montecito Picture Company as “C.”
The author, James Verniere said in the paper that the film contains rude humor and continued by praising the lead actors:
“Fisher and Bell are game and talented comic actors, and the kids are fun. But the secondary characters are barely sketched in. A raccoon named Gary who cleans house is a furry bore, and not even Nilsson’s ‘Midnight Cowboy’ soundtrack classic ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ can lighten the mood. Can I just watch ‘Elf,’ please?“
What’s more, regarding the film, which is set in a magical world “The Motherland” and follows a trainee fairy godmother named ‘Eleanor’ (Jillian Bell), Rotten Tomatoes‘ critics’ consensus is as follows:
‘Godmothered tweaks fairytale conventions with just enough self-aware humor to overcome a disappointing deficit of genuine magic.”
On the website, the film has received an average score of 46 out of 100 so far.
As cinema lovers can remember, Maguire’s film was first announced on September 7, 2019 and production began on January 20, 2020. Filming took place at North Square, Boston, and Oxford respectively.
