‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 will premiere in 2025 and will be shorter than Season 1 with seven episodes. The show will possibly have a ‘significantly larger’ Season 3 and 4, though.
Writers, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, recently shared about their plans (per Deadline):
“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons. When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the natural breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
The Series’ Fate Depends On Ratings
Mazin noted that the HBO series’ return depends on the viewership:
“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too. We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”
‘The Last of Us’ Season 1 was well-received by critics. It won several awards including eight Primetime Emmy Awards after its release in 2023.
Season 2 Production Continues
Season 2 is currently in production. The filming continues in Vancouver with Gabriel Luna, Rutina Wesley, Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Danny Ramirez, and Spencer Lord. Catherine O’Hara joins them in an undisclosed guest-starring role.
Two new images show Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey back as Joel and Ellie. Writers say they plan to change the characters’ story from the video games a little bit:
“Sometimes it will be radically different, and sometimes it will be [barely] different at all. But it’s going to be different and it will be its own thing. It won’t be exactly like the game.”
The second of ‘The Last of Us’ games follows Ellie and Joel five years after settling down in Tommy and Maria’s Jackson, Wyo. community. Ellie seeks revenge on those responsible for a violent event breaking the peace.
