‘Greenland 2’ Is Officially Happening With Gerard Butler And Morena Baccarin

The action-packed world of ‘Greenland’ is getting a sequel, and it’s officially on the calendar to start shooting in the UK this April.

Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin are confirmed to return, alongside director Ric Roman Waugh, for the upcoming film titled ‘Greenland: Migration.’ Behind the scenes, a mix of returning and new names are coming together to bring the project to life.

The production team includes heavyweights from Thunder Road Pictures, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, alongside Anton’s Sébastien Raybaud and John Zois. G-BASE’s Gerard Butler and Alan Siegel, with CineMachine’s Brendon Boyea, are also on board, with executive production credits going to Robert Simonds, Noah Fogelson, and Sam Brown of STX Entertainment, Ric Roman Waugh for CineMachine, and Chris Sparling.

The Team Is Returning With A New Company

Raybaud shared his excitement about the project, saying:

“We are thrilled to have Gerard, Morena and Ric back on board for ‘Greenland: Migration’ to show the audiences what happened next to the Garrity family. To be back working with the teams at G-BASE, Thunder Road, CineMachine and STX, we know the next installment will be just as captivating as the first.”

STX will handle the new film’s international distribution while sharing financing and production duties with Anton. The project will continue to be on sale at the EFM via Black Bear, and domestic representation will go to CAA Media Finance.

The Upcoming Film’s Budget

Interest in the movie has been strong internationally, signaling a positive outlook for its release. Details about the domestic release are still in the air, but there’s talk about Lionsgate being a potential distributor, given its past dealings with STX.

With a budget set at $65 million, a significant increase from the first film’s $35 million, expectations are high. STX Entertainment’s President of Production, Sam Brown, commented:

“The success of ‘Greenland’ showcased in a narratively and visually compelling way what one man will do to protect and provide for his family against the most cataclysmic of odds. We could not be more excited to be continuing the Garrity’s harrowing story with Gerry, Morena, Ric and all of our wonderful producers and partners around the world.”

Original Writer Makes A Comeback

Chris Sparling and Mitchell Lafortune penned the sequel’s plot, focusing on the Garrity family as they leave the safety of the Greenland bunker into the wasteland of Europe, looking for a new place to call home.

The original film made its debut in the summer of 2020 through theatrical showings, SVOD platforms, and an exclusive U.S. run on HBO Max, finding success despite the global lockdowns.
