‘Catwoman’ came out in theaters 20 years ago on July 19, 2004. To celebrate this milestone, Halle Berry posted on Instagram to honor the film where she played Catwoman.
The actress posed topless with two black cats covering her chest, wearing black bikini bottoms and a Catwoman-style mask. She wrote in the caption:
“And STILL… meow! It’s been 20 years today since I had the honor of bringing this iconic character to life. She will always be close to my heart and I will forever be Patience Phillips aka CATWOMAN! Thank you, Jee H. Lim. When these black beauties showed up in my yard searching for their mother, Jee helped us through the rescue process. Forever grateful!”
The cats in the photos are the same ones Berry rescued in June. She shared on Instagram how she got the kittens and named them Boots and Coco, writing:
“I found these two little fur babies in my yard along with their 2 siblings and their mom! I got the mommy spayed and released her back in my yard and she’s now our outdoor cat and the other 2 babies I’ve found a forever home for and these two are our new lovies. It’s a full house over here!”
Berry’s Comments On Catwoman’s Costume
‘Catwoman’ was criticized before it came out, partly because of Berry’s revealing costume, which was different from the usual catsuit. An early image of this outfit leaked online and upset fans. In a new interview with EW, Berry said she thinks the redesign was a good idea:
“Fans were upset about the suit. It was something different, but in our minds, why keep remaking ‘Catwoman’ if you’re not going to take risks and bring something different to it? The beauty was that it was better suited for my version of her, my body, who I was, and my sensibilities.”
The actress added:
“The beauty of doing it was because it wasn’t in the ‘Batman’ universe. Men, historically, get to have big franchises that revolve around them. This was an opportunity to be forward-thinking, pushing that envelope for women. Why can’t we have our own superhero movie that revolves around us and our universe?”
In her EW chat, the actress shared that she spent months learning capoeira and studying cats to prepare for the role. She had a cat named Playdough to help her understand how cats move and think. She practiced by crawling around her house and imagining how a cat would act.
