The 2004 movie ‘Catwoman’ with Halle Berry faced criticism before its release. It was partly due to Berry’s revealing costume, which was different from the usual catsuit. An early image of Berry in this new outfit leaked online and upset fans.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Producer Denise Di Novi said it was an unfinished version and aimed for a modern, rock & roll look. Despite the backlash, Berry and the team believe the redesign was a good idea. The actress said during the same chat:
“Fans were upset about the suit. It was something different, but in our minds, why keep remaking ‘Catwoman’ if you’re not going to take risks and bring something different to it? The beauty was that it was better suited for my version of her, my body, who I was, and my sensibilities.”
Berry continued:
“The beauty of doing it was because it wasn’t in the ‘Batman’ universe. Men, historically, get to have big franchises that revolve around them. This was an opportunity to be forward-thinking, pushing that envelope for women. Why can’t we have our own superhero movie that revolves around us and our universe?”
How Did Berry Prepare For Her Role?
In her EW interview, the actress also said she spent months learning capoeira and practiced moving like a cat to prepare for the role:
“They gave me a cat early on because I didn’t have one. His name was Playdough. I watched, studied, and learned how cats think. I didn’t have the responsibility of children and family; I was just a woman alone with a lot of idle time to focus on this. I was a full-on cat, all the time. I’d crawl around my house, trying to jump on my counters, thinking, ‘If I were a cat, how would I get up there?’ I was in it 24/7.”
Last month, Ariana Grande’s new music video for ‘The Boy is Mine’ featured her dressed as Catwoman. Berry liked Ariana’s look and showed her support on Twitter.
