Miriam Margolyes revealed in her book ‘Oh Miriam!’ released in September 2023, that she passed on a role in Marvel’s ‘WandaVision’ spin-off ‘Agatha.’ She mentioned her reasons were a mix of not wanting to revisit a witch character and not being keen on living in the US, specifically Georgia, for the filming.
Margolyes was quoted by News.com recalling:
“They contacted me and said, ‘We’re doing a story about witches.’ I thought, ‘Oh God, not witches again because I’ve done that with Harry Potter.’ I don’t like America, and I didn’t want to be in Georgia for four months. So, I just said, ‘Well, I want a million pounds ($1.2 million),’ and they said, ‘You can have half a million,’ and I said, ‘No, I don’t want to do it,’ so it just stopped. Really, it’s a story about my own greed rather than anything else.”
The Actress Is Not Too Fond Of Witch Roles
Margolyes played Professor Pomona Sprout in ‘The Chamber of Secrets’ and ‘The Deathly Hallows – Part 2.’ She recently made the headlines with her comments about adult ‘Harry Potter’ fans.
In an interview on TVNZ’s 1News, the actress said the adult fans should’ve moved on by now and explained:
“I worry about ‘Harry Potter’ fans because they should be over that by now. You know, it was 25 years ago, and it’s for children. I think it’s for children. But they get stuck in it. I do cameos, and people say, ‘I’m having a ‘Harry Potter’-themed wedding,’ and I think, ‘Gosh, what’s their first night of fun going to be?’ I can’t even think about it. ‘Harry Potter’ is wonderful; I’m very grateful for it. It’s over. That’s what I think.”
Margolyes also mentioned enjoying her time in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise but personally does not think it’s ‘important.’
Harry Potter Is Set To Return
Meanwhile, the franchise itself is far from over, with a new ‘Harry Potter’ TV series announced by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav for a 2026 debut.
With casting still in the works and possible involvement from showrunners like Francesca Gardiner, this series is set to re-explore the original books across ten years on the Max streaming service. J.K. Rowling will be involved in the production to ensure it stays true to the original material.
