In a recent announcement reported by The Wrap, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed the release date of the long-anticipated Harry Potter television series.
Zaslav shared his enthusiasm about the project during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call on February 23, saying:
“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around ‘Harry Potter.’ The last film was made more than a dozen years ago. I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, CEO of HBO] and Channing [Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros Television], and we spent some real time with JK and her team. Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max. We’re aiming for a debut in 2026.”
The involvement of Rowling, who retains creative control over adaptations of her work, has been crucial in moving the project forward. She will serve as an executive producer, ensuring the series remains faithful to the original books.
Everything We Know About ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series
Set to debut on the Max streaming service, The Harry Potter TV series is a major undertaking for Warner Bros. Discovery. The project, announced in April 2023, promises to explore Rowling’s novels in depth and detail, covering all seven books over the span of 10 consecutive years.
As the series is still in the early stages of development, specific details about casting and plot remain under wraps. Warner Bros. is currently meeting with potential writers to shape the vision of the adaptation, with names like Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran, Michael Lesslie, and Francesca Gardiner emerging as key figures in the creative process.
Gardiner, known for her work on ‘Succession,’ has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the showrunner role. Moreover, the series will be accessible across multiple tiers of the Max streaming service, as well as to HBO cable subscribers, to ensure a wide reach.
While the casting process has yet to begin, the search for new actors to portray the series’ characters is anticipated to follow the selection of a showrunner.
