Henry Cavill’s latest venture, the high-budget spy thriller ‘Argylle,’ failed to meet its box office expectations with a $100 million loss. This is another setback for the actor, whose departure from roles such as Superman in the DCEU and Geralt of Rivia in ‘The Witcher’ series has been closely followed by his fans.
Directed by Matthew Vaughn and featuring a cast including Bryce Dallas-Howard, Sam Rockwell, Dua Lipa, and Sofia Boutella, ‘Argylle‘ was expected to be a major hit for Apple and Universal. Despite the potential, the film’s performance tells a different story.
With a production budget exceeding $200 million and promotional expenses topping $80 million, ‘Argylle’ needed to gross over $500 million to break even. However, the reality fell short, with the film receiving just $94 million worldwide — a far cry from its targets.
This places ‘Argylle’ among other high-budget Apple TV+ films, such as ‘Napoleon’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ which similarly struggled to make a financial impact.
Fans Feel Sad For Cavill
Public and fan reactions to ‘Argylle’ have been mixed, with many expressing their sympathy for Cavill on social media. Responding to The Hollywood Handle’s tweet reporting the news, some fans touched upon Cavill’s limited role in ‘Argylle,’ despite the film’s promotion implied otherwise:
“Henry was barely in it, but he’s the only thing people will talk about when this movie’s brought up.”
Another wrote:
“The movie was highly misleading. The trailer was NOT what the movie was at all. Its first 20 minutes suck and bore you to death, then things change, but it has a major slow start to captivate the audience, and the main cast isn’t even in the trailer that made people go.”
Others expressed their sympathies for Cavill as he struggled to come up with a successful project after his tenure as ‘Superman:’
“That’s a mega-flop. Poor Henry, first Superman, now this.”
Although ‘Argylle’ appears to be a failure, there is speculation about Cavill’s potential involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the tables may turn for the actor in the future.
