It’s been confirmed that HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ will have four seasons in total. At a press conference about the Season 2 finale, showrunner Ryan Condal announced that the show will end after Season 4.
Condal said that the third season is being written now and they’ll start preparing for it this fall. They plan to begin filming in early 2025. When asked if Season 3 will also have eight episodes like Season 2, Condal replied:
“I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on.”
George R.R. Martin, co-creator of ‘House of the Dragon,’ had said on his blog that he thinks it would take four seasons of 10 episodes each to cover the ‘Dance of the Dragons’ story from his book ‘Fire & Blood.’ HBO hadn’t confirmed the number of seasons until now.
Fans Want To See More Battle Scenes
The first two seasons have built up the war between Team Green and Team Black. At the conference, Condal talked about the lack of big battle scenes in the second season, especially the Battle of the Gullet, which many fans wanted to see:
“We were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated — well, I would say maybe the second-most-anticipated — action event of ‘Fire & Blood’ trying to give it the time and the space that it deserves. Obviously, as anybody that’s seen the finale, we’re building to that event. That event will happen very shortly in terms of the storytelling of ‘House of the Dragon.'”
‘House of the Dragon’ is set 200 years before ‘Game of Thrones’ and centers on the conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen. Fans have split into two groups—Team Black (Rhaenyra’s supporters) and Team Green.
There is no confirmed release date, but based on the previous seasons, we might see the series finale of ‘House of the Dragon’ in 2028. The first season came out in August 2022, and the second in July 2024. Filming for the third season is expected to start in early 2025, likely airing in 2026.
