Isabela Merced Feels Bad For People That Worked For ‘Madame Web’

The actress is proud of the Sony film despite negative reactions.

‘Madame Web’ faced poor reviews and struggled at the box office after its release in February 2024. It also became a target for jokes and memes across social media.

Isabela Merced recently shared with the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast that the online buzz also sparked fun in the cast’s group chat. “But at the same time, it does have a sad taste in my mouth,” she continued. “Because there were people that worked on it that worked really hard and maybe this was their opportunity to have a big break and I just can’t help but think about those people that put in the work.”

Merced played Anya Corazón in the Spider-Man spinoff, alongside Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Tahar Rahim. After the Sony film, she secured another superhero role in James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman.’

“I’m lucky enough to have other opportunities right now, that’s what I feel really blessed about, but I do feel bad for the other people that put their all into this and, there are so many cooks in the kitchen, so even though you might mean well, somebody else might not understand the assignment,” the actress explained.

‘Madame Web’ underperformed at the box office, earning $100.3 million against a budget of $80–100 million. It also received just 11% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, Merced still liked the movie.

“I love a campy movie,” she said. “Honestly, I love ‘The Room,’ I love ‘Flubber,’ and I love ‘Catwoman.’ Those are my favorites, so I am a little bit proud of it, in that sense.”

Last month, Merced’s ‘Madame Web’ co-star, Emma Roberts, blamed social media for the film’s failure. She mentioned loving the movie herself and noted, “If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different.”
