The recent announcement of a new sci-fi movie starring Rebecca Ferguson and Chris Pratt, titled ‘Mercy,’ stirred a wave of backlash among fans. According to Twitter responses, many believe it is a copy of another movie.
Unveiled by Amazon MGM Studios with much anticipation, the film is now under scrutiny for its resemblance to the 2002 hit ‘Minority Report,’ directed by Steven Spielberg and featuring Tom Cruise.
Despite the excitement surrounding Ferguson’s recent blockbuster success in ‘Dune: Part Two’ and Chris Pratt’s continued popularity, fan reactions to ‘Mercy’ have been less than favorable. Social media platforms have been flooded with comments expressing disappointment over the lack of originality in the film’s premise:
“I feel like we’ve seen this movie a million times before.”
Accusations of the movie being a reiteration of ‘Minority Report’ even led to the project being dubbed ‘Minority Report 2’ by fans:
“It’s about time that we finally got a sequel to ‘Minority Report,’ it’s a shame that Tom wasn’t available for this one.”

What’s ‘Mercy’ About?
Set to be directed by Timur Bekmambetov, ‘Mercy’ follows the story of a detective in the distant future who is wrongfully accused of a crime. With no choice but to prove his innocence, the plot mirrors the narrative of ‘Minority Report,‘ where Cruise’s character, a PreCrime officer, faces a similar predicament.
The high-profile names in the production of ‘Mercy’ have done little to ease the discontent among fans. The film, apart from Ferguson and Pratt, is backed by Charles Roven, a producer recently nominated for an Oscar for ‘Oppenheimer,’ and Robert Amidon from Atlas Entertainment.
Despite the backlash, ‘Mercy’ is still in the early stages of production, with a spring start date targeted. However, the strong initial response shows a growing demand for originality and innovation in the genre.
