It’s Official! Metamorpho Confirmed For ‘Superman’ By James Gunn

Gunn plans to rely on practical effects to create his abilities.

Director James Gunn has confirmed a long-debated detail about a fan-favorite character set to appear in his upcoming ‘Superman’ film.

Gunn is now focusing on a classic approach for ‘Superman.’ He’s aiming to stay close to the original comic book material. One character sparks extra excitement: Metamorpho, aka Rex Mason. This will be Metamorpho’s first appearance in a live-action film played by actor Anthony Carrigan.

Metamorpho has powers that make him unique even among superheroes. His body can shift into different states —solid, liquid, and gas— due to a chemical transformation. This allows him to combine elements and reshape himself for different situations. How Gunn planned to bring Metamorpho’s abilities to life on screen was a mystery. If you were expecting full CGI effects, Gunn is here to surprise you. He recently confirmed that the film will rely on practical effects instead.

‘Superman’ will feature key names in Superman’s world, starting with his adoptive family the Kents. Actor Pruitt Taylor Vince will play Jonathan Kent and Neva Howell will star as Martha Kent. Several members of The Daily Planet staff are also confirmed to appear. Mikaela Hoover will portray Cat Grant, Beck Bennett will play sports journalist Steve Lombard, and Christopher McDonald will star as Ron Troupe. We’ll also see Nicholas Hoult as Superman’s well-known enemy Lex Luthor.

‘Superman’ is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
