It’s Official: Robert Downey Jr. Returns MCU As Doctor Doom

Marvel Cinematic Universe welcomes back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Robert Downey Jr. is coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom in a new ‘Avengers’ movie called ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Joe and Anthony Russo will direct this movie and another one called ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

Recently, the actor said he might return to Marvel, and fans thought he would be Iron Man/Tony Stark again. But his comeback as the villain Doctor Doom surprised everyone, especially the excited crowd at San Diego Comic-Con. Downey announced his return at Hall H on Saturday evening. Downey spoke to the crowd from the stage:

“New mask, same task. What can I say, I like playing complicated characters.”

In Marvel comics, Doctor Doom is often with Doombot replicas. Similarly, people in Doom costumes took the stage, and then Downey revealed himself, getting huge applause from the crowd.

Downey Was Already Open To Return To Marvel

This year, Downey has openly shown interest in returning to Marvel. After his Oscar win for ‘Oppenheimer,’ Esquire magazine asked if he’d come back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He quickly said yes:

“Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

Downey first played Tony Stark in 2008’s ‘Iron Man,’ the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the next 11 years, he appeared as Stark in 10 more Marvel films, including ‘Iron Man 2,’ ‘Iron Man 3,’ ‘The Avengers,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Stark and Doom are similar in Marvel comics. They both wear metal masks, are rich, and are scientific geniuses. They have also crossed paths directly before. After the 2016 comic ‘Civil War II,’ Stark was in a coma, and Victor Von Doom became Iron Man in the series ‘Infamous Iron Man.’
