In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron said he is willing to direct the new ‘Avatar’ movies.
“Sure. Absolutely,” Cameron said when asked if he intends to direct ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ himself. “I mean, they’re going to have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I’m doing. Why would I not? And they’re written, by the way.”
The director continued his words, “I just reread both of them about a month ago. They’re cracking stories. They’ve got to get made. Look, if I get hit by a bus and I’m in an iron lung, somebody else is going to do it.”
After the second film, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ there were rumors that Cameron might not direct the fourth and fifth movies when they started production. “The Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming,” Cameron told Empire magazine at the time.
He added, “I think eventually over time — I don’t know if that’s after three or after four — I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”
Cameron also shared that each new film in the saga makes him even more excited, “Everything I need to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about the natural world, the themes that are important to me in real life and in my cinematic life, I can say on this canvas.”
He noted, “Movie four is a corker. It’s a motherf*cker. I actually hope I get to make it. But it depends on market forces. Three is in the can, so it’s coming out regardless. I really hope that we get to make four and five because it’s one big story, ultimately.”
The third ‘Avatar’ movie, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ will arrive in theaters on December 19, 2025. ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ are planned to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively.
