James Gunn recently gave fans a clearer picture of the future of the DC Universe.
Gunn took to his Threads account to respond to claims about the status of DCU projects that were previously announced. Some fans were under the impression that all of these projects were guaranteed to be made, but Gunn set the record straight.
Gunn explained that just because a project was announced doesn’t mean it will definitely happen. “Just to clarify, I said everything we originally announced was still in development not that it’s still coming. That all depends on the scripts! We’ll never put a half-assed script in production just because it was announced,” he said.
This means that some projects could stay in development for a long time or never get made at all if the script isn’t up to par. This might be disappointing to hear, but Gunn believes it’s better to focus on quality. This strategy also aims to avoid the problems that affected the previous DC cinematic universe.
There are still some DCU projects that are definitely moving forward. Three projects either finished filming or are currently in production and have confirmed release dates. ‘Creature Commandos’ is set to premiere on Max on December 5, 2024, and its first trailer has already been released. The upcoming ‘Superman’ movie, scheduled for July 11, 2025, wrapped production in July. ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 has been filming in Atlanta and is expected to release in 2025.
Gunn says his focus is on making sure the projects that do move forward are worth the investment, both in terms of quality and budget.
